Background
In today’s complicated IT environment, UNIX-based applications continue to play an important role. Many business critical systems – such as banking systems, automobile dealer networks, healthcare solutions – are based on UNIX due to the high availability of the technology. In fact, the Internet revolution has accelerated UNIX application deployment in many fields.
Existing Issue
Unfortunately, access to UNIX-based applications traditionally requires a computer terminal or terminal emulation software. Because of this limitation, these applications can be difficult to fully integrate into modern, Windows-based environments.
There are several issues to be dealt with when working with medium- to large-scale installations of UNIX-based applications:
- An individual UNIX-based application might be hosted by multiple servers, and each server may require UNIX user ID creation and maintenance. In many organizations multiple environments for different purposes will be created, such as systems for production, development, training, quality assurance, etc. This further complicates the application support and increases IT overhead.
- Some UNIX-based applications use a unique session identification ID to track logged-on users and running sessions in order to avoid conflict and to maintain consistency with other dependent processes. However, the identification ID assignment, cycling, and management have also proven to be a major overhead.
- In many cases, organizations are likely to uses company-wide desktop Windows NT/2000/XP infrastructures to support UNIX-based applications. These desktops require terminal emulation software to be implemented and supported for UNIX applications to be accessed.
The question each organization should ask:
- Are we employing multiple full time staff, i.e., UNIX administrators, to create/maintain UNIX user IDs, maintain UNIX menus, and maintain logon scripts on a daily basis?
- Are we employing multiple staff, i.e., additional desktop support personnel, to install and maintain terminal emulation software?
- Do we want to reduce our IT support overhead?
If you answer yes to any of these questions, then we can provide professional services to address these issues.
