Cliff 20: A Future on the Spectrum

Follows three fathers of young men with Autism. Through candid interviews, the fathers share the difficult journey of raising their children, and the struggles their sons face trying to find meaningful employment, and participate in a society that doesn't seem to understand them. As their boys age out of traditional support systems, one father has taken matters into his own hands, developing a unique training program that might help adults with Autism find success in the workforce. This short documentary captures the fathers’ journey, and their sons’ stories of courage and hope.

Technology North & Alberta Innovates Interview

Autism Employees Interview

“Our son is a higher functioning young adult with autism and has been employed with TNDS since December 2019. The results of him integrating into and thriving in this position have been nothing short of fantastic! TNDS has created a supportive and nurturing environment for these young adults to complete their work efficiently and competently. The mechanism for him to earn money, have a daily purpose, learn teamwork skills and support his goal of living independently is beyond measure. We can’t thank the management and staff at TNDS enough for providing him with this opportunity!”

-A Happy Edmonton Father

“The speed and efficiency of your team in getting entire files and boxes of documents back to us in a useable electronic format have far surpassed our expectations. Our staff here at RMRF looked at scanning and digitizing as a daunting task. Since partnering with you and your team at Technology North, our staff no longer worry and have found finding old documents and items to be faster and more efficient than digging through boxes of old files.”

-Jason W. Schwab FCMA, FCPA | Chief Operations Officer, RMRF

“My work with Technology North is always engaging, even if I know what to expect from it. I like the predictability of it and that I know exactly how to handle it if an issue does arise. Since being hired by TNDS my problem-solving skills, communication, and teamwork have all improved. I also believe in myself and my abilities more since working for TNDS.”

TESTIMONIALS

In 2004, when TN CEO Ling Huang and his wife learned that their son, Brian, was on the autism spectrum with severe language impairment, like parents around the world who hear these words, they were very concerned about Brian’s future. In 2010, realizing that the support services were not able to keep up with Brian’s development, Ling, a systems engineer, deeply explored the problem. Inefficiencies in data collection, sharing, and actioning were preventing Brian and millions globally with autism from reaching their highest growth potential during their childhood years.

The team created TN ActiveCare to improve client care through better data collection, sharing, and analysis. In 2014, when Brian was entering high school, Ling asked, “What will life be like for Brian when he finishes high school?” This question led to many years of masBility research and development, culminating in the creation of RoboCoach. RoboCoach is the primary workhorse of TN Digital Services (TNDS), TN’s successful supported ASD employment venture, providing excellent-quality document digitization by workers with Autism Spectrum Disorder. To date, TNDS has been in operations for over a year, digitizing more than 2 million pages with zero errors, proving the ASD employment model of TN and the value of RoboCoach.

A path beginning like many others…
